Water Treatment & Testing FAQ

Common questions answered - your specific water situation is best discussed in a consultation.

What contaminants does your water testing identify?

Our testing screens for the full range of issues common in North Carolina well water, including:

  • Iron, sediment, and sand that cause staining and gritty buildup
  • Hardness (calcium and magnesium) that scales pipes and appliances
  • Manganese and hydrogen sulfide that create discoloration and a rotten-egg odor
  • Bacteria and other microbiological contaminants
  • Nitrates, pH imbalance, and heavy metals such as lead and arsenic

On-site field tests cover the most common problems, while certified laboratory analysis provides detailed profiling for complex or high-risk contamination.

Which is safer - well or city water?

Neither is automatically safer than the other - it depends on treatment and monitoring. City water is treated and regularly tested by the municipality, but it also arrives with added chlorine and can pick up contaminants from aging distribution pipes. Well water is naturally filtered and free of municipal additives, but because it isn't monitored by anyone but you, it must be tested and treated to stay safe.

With proper testing and a properly designed treatment system, well water is every bit as safe as (and often better-tasting than) city water - and it gives you complete control over your own supply.

How do you know which water filtration system is right for my home?

We never guess - the right system is determined entirely by your water test results. After testing, we match your specific water chemistry to the equipment that solves it:

  • Sediment and cartridge filters for iron, sand, and particulates
  • Water softeners for hardness and scale control
  • Aeration systems for sulfur odor and manganese
  • UV sterilization for bacteria and microbiological threats
  • pH neutralizers to correct acidic water

When multiple issues are present, we combine these into a single multi-stage system so every concern is addressed together.

How long does a water treatment system last?

Quality treatment equipment typically lasts 10-15+ years with proper maintenance, and many systems run well beyond that when serviced on schedule. The main components - tanks, control valves, and media - are built for long-term use, while filter cartridges and treatment media are consumable and need periodic replacement based on your water usage and contaminant load.

We'll provide a maintenance schedule specific to your system so it keeps performing for its full lifespan.

Is treated well water safe to drink and use?

Yes, when it's properly tested and treated. We guarantee that your treated well water meets or exceeds EPA and municipal potability standards, so it's safe to drink, cook with, and use throughout your home.

Our systems remove the contaminants that make untreated well water unsafe or unpleasant, and we verify water quality after installation to confirm it meets that standard before we consider the job complete.

How often does a custom well water treatment system require maintenance?

Maintenance needs depend on your water chemistry and usage, but a typical schedule looks like this:

  • Filter cartridges: replaced roughly every 6-12 months
  • Water softener salt: checked and topped up every 1-2 months
  • UV lamps: replaced annually to maintain effectiveness
  • Full system inspection and media check: once per year

We provide a maintenance plan tailored to your specific system and offer ongoing support so it keeps running reliably year after year.
