What is well drilling & why is it necessary?

Well drilling is the process of boring deep into the earth to reach a natural groundwater source, then installing the casing, pump, and pressure system needed to bring that water up to your home. It's how properties gain a private, self-sufficient water supply - no municipal hookup required.

For many homes across Rowan County and the surrounding areas, a well is necessary because a city or county water line isn't available, is too costly to connect to, or doesn't provide the independence homeowners want. A properly drilled well gives you reliable, long-term access to clean water that you own and control - and our NC-certified contractors manage every step, from evaluating your property's groundwater conditions to completing the well, installing the pump, and verifying water quality.

Great communication and great service. Would highly recommend.

What Our Well Drilling Process Like?

Every well drilling project is managed end-to-end by our NC-certified crew. From the initial site visit through drilling, pump installation, and water testing, we handle each stage so you get a complete, operational water system without coordinating with multiple contractors.

Book Your Consultation
Site Prep & Rig Setup We'll secure the area, level the drilling rig, raise the tower, and connect the water line hose from the support truck to the rig's pump.
Drill the Overburden We drill a wide upper hole through the soil and loose earth using foam or circulating mud to keep the walls from collapsing before reaching solid rock.
Set & Grout Casing Next, we insert the well casing into the hole to seal out surface contaminants, then pump in cement grout to permanently secure and seal it in place.
Drill the Bedrock For drilling bedrock, we switch to a smaller hammer or specialized drill bit to bore directly through the hard bedrock until we hit a water-bearing fracture or vein.
Test Well Yield (GPM) We'll shut off the support water, build a small dam with a measuring weir, and blow compressed air into the well to measure the water's Gallons Per Minute (GPM) flow rate.
Install the Pump System Our techs size and lower the appropriate pump, tank, and wiring into the well, then connect them to a power source (grid, solar, or hand pump) to deliver the water.

Residential Well Drilling FAQ

General answers to get you started - your site specifics are best discussed in a consultation.

How do you determine the best location for a well?

Choosing the right well location starts with paperwork, not drilling. In most cases you must first obtain a permit, after which the local health department will visit the property and identify a suitable drilling area. Their approval is based on setback rules that keep your water source a safe distance from potential sources of contamination, including:

  • Septic fields and drain lines
  • Homes, garages, and other buildings
  • Property lines and easements
  • Livestock fields and animal enclosures
  • Existing water and utility lines

Once an approved area is designated, we weigh additional site factors before positioning the rig, such as nearby trees and their root systems, the slope and terrain of the land, and proximity to overhead power lines. While dowsing is sometimes used to guess where water may be found, it is not a precise or reliable method. That is why extensive local knowledge matters most - our years of experience in the field plays a crucial role in placing a well where it will perform optimally for the long haul.

What equipment is used for well drilling?

A residential well installation is completed using a coordinated set of specialized equipment, most of it mounted on or supporting the drilling rig. A typical job relies on:

  • A truck-mounted drilling rig with a hydraulic tower (mast) that raises and drives the drill string
  • Air rotary or mud rotary drilling methods, chosen based on the soil and rock conditions
  • Drill bits and down-the-hole hammers sized to bore through soft overburden and hard bedrock
  • Steel or PVC casing that lines the upper hole and seals out surface contaminants
  • A grout pump that seals cement around the casing to protect the well
  • A support water truck that supplies water and helps clear cuttings during drilling
  • An air compressor used to airlift water from the well and measure its yield
  • The pump system - submersible pump, drop pipe, wiring, and pressure tank - installed to deliver water to the home

How is water quality tested in new wells?

Water quality in a new well is verified using a combination of on-site field tests and certified laboratory analyses, since different contaminants require different tools to detect accurately.

  • Field tests - a sample is checked on-site for basic parameters such as pH, hardness, iron content, and total dissolved solids (TDS).
  • Certified lab tests - more sensitive contaminants such as arsenic, lead, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), radionuclides, and bacteria like coliform are analyzed in a certified laboratory.

Dividing testing between the field and the lab ensures a comprehensive assessment of your water quality.

What are the costs associated with well drilling?

The total cost of a well project comes from two main phases: drilling the well itself, and installing the pump and distribution system that delivers water to your home.

Drilling costs typically include permits, price-per-foot drilling, well casing, grouting, labor/fuel, and mobilization fees.

Pump and distribution costs may include the pump itself, submersible wires, the drop pipe, a well seal, an accessory installation kit, electrical supplies (such as disconnects and a breaker), and trenching to lay the wire and pipe that carry water to its destination.

How long does the well drilling process usually take?

The time it takes to drill a well and install the pump can vary significantly, ranging from as little as 6 hours to a couple of days. Several factors influence the timeline, including how deep we have to drill, the geology and rock we encounter, the amount of trenching required to reach the home, and site access and weather on the day of the job.

Typically, if everything goes smoothly and we start early, it's possible to drill the well, install the pump, and trench to the application all within one full day.

How can I ensure sustainable water use from my well?

Sustainable water use comes down to good day-to-day habits and consistent care for your system - using water efficiently, watching for early signs of trouble, and keeping up with routine maintenance so small issues never turn into major repairs. The easiest way to stay ahead of it is to join our maintenance program, which includes:

  • Extended warranties on your system
  • Discounts on labor and parts

What Our Customers Say

Reliable service that speaks for itself.

Rowan Well Drilling did a great job of reviewing our county approved drill locations with us the day before starting. The day of drilling, they talked me through all stages of the process and helped set expectations. When we reached water depth, they talked me through the best scenarios and how to make sure the well would produce enough for our needs. The day was a good experience from start to finish, and I'm glad we had Rowan Well Drilling help us with our new home build project.

CT Hoskins

They worked hard to produce our well, gushing at 30 gallons per minute. That moment was unforgettable! I feel good saying that you won’t regret using Rowan Well Drilling to fulfill all of your well drilling needs. Truly a great team, and some of the nicest people you’ll ever work with.

Local Homeowner

Rowan Well Drilling were at our house to drill... They were able to complete the drill in one day, drilling a total of 210 ft. The technicians were very professional and I would recommend these guys to anyone. Thank you so much for a job well done!
